Week6_Georeferencing



This Lab was well documented and the photos are good quality. The corner areas with no known data to reference seem to still be distorted otherwise the results are acceptable. I learned that when you update georeferencing you can get back to the control point table and refine further if needed but not if you rectify.

Week5_Hillsborough County



Early on I decided to use a 11x 17 format for this weeks deliverable map. I also wanted to use one map for all the data. It was several iterations before I settled on this layout of the map elements. At this scale I decided to generalize most of the roads layer and use it for reference only. It took a while but I feel this was fairly successful at displaying all the required data and still communicating the intended theme. I had to go back and redo some of the annotation and the scale bar. I must have been in one of the inset data frames when I put in my original scale. Doh!
After Finding all the required data the biggest challenge was symbolizing the Hydrography layers without creating too much noise.

Haiti Response Map



This Haiti map is from WFP Emergency Preparedness Branch (ODEP). I chose the current roads thematic map for it’s obvious usefulness. Most of the participation posts included some kind of road layer and I found this map to be a great example of road information. It utilizes both point and line data to inform and illustrate the hazards that relief efforts may encounter. I see this as an invaluable resource to those on the ground in Haiti.

Week4_Projections



This week’s lab was a practical look at projections. It made the necessity of knowing your data’s source projection and use clearer for me. Also, I learned that map layers should be projected the same to get accurate analysis.

Week3_Deliverables

Week 3 Map #3

For Map 3 I selected the color ramp "elevation#2" by clicking the color ramp selector and un-checking graphic view. I tried "elevation#1" but found it a bit harsh at the data resolution and map scale. There was no metadata for the elevation raster but I was able to determine that it was in meters. It was a surprise to find out that Mexico has 18,000+ ft. high peaks.
I didn't think this map required a key for orientation. Mexico is adjacent to the United States. Topology in action.
